Why I want to be on the School Board
Having children in the district I felt that I had a vested interest and I wanted to do whatever I could to help all children. I also want to do my very best to help preserve the "Olivet Way."
Why am I proud of our school system
I am proud of our school system most of all because of the way that we can put our differences aside and focus on what we all are passionate about which is the education and welfare of our kids.
Since becoming a School Board Member, Rick has become a MASB Certified Board Member earning the Level 2 - Award of Merit. He has attended MASB classes on topics of School Board Policy, Finance & Budget, School Law, Curriculum & Instruction, Labor Relations, Legislation, Technology, Open Meetings Act, Succession Planning, etc.

I am a Certified Public Accountant and have been in private practice for 23 years.

Why I want to be on the School Board:
In college, one of my auditing professors told our class that “everyone needs a turn at public service.” This statement made a lasting impression on me. I offer to the Olivet community a knowledge of school, county, state and federal finance. My vocational background combined with a lifetime of living in the Olivet area will allow me to seek cooperation among the school district's residents, teachers and school administrators.

Additional Information:
I was raised in Olivet and graduated from Olivet High School. After attending college and working in Mount Pleasant, my wife, Heidi, and I moved back to the Olivet area in 1995. We have two sons currently attending Olivet High School. I have an independent, fresh, and financially oriented perspective which can be a real asset to the entire community.

I was elected in November 2012 and began serving in January 2013 as a trustee on the Olivet School Board.  I am currently taking courses through the Michigan School Board Association including the six hour orientation for new board members.
I am a retired educator having served 32 years in K-12 public education in Eaton County. My teaching career includes six years with Potterville Public schools and 16 years with Olivet Community Schools between 1978 and 2001. While in Olivet I served as the elementary and middle school principal from 2001 until my retirement in February of 2011. 
My husband, Joe Barkley and I are life-long residents of the Olivet community and our three children, Jay, Jeffrey and Katy are graduates of Olivet Community Schools. Joe is an Olivet City Council member and we share a strong commitment to serve the community that has been our home for over 50 years.
Recent employment included working in a grant funded school readiness program providing educational services to families in Battle Creek with children from birth through 5 years. Through this work experience, my learning has been expanded to understand that education begins at birth and families need the support of educators long before the first day of kindergarten. As a board member, I will bring a deep knowledge and understanding of early childhood education, the long term impact of students not achieving success in reading and math skills by third grade and the importance of a rigorous and relevant middle school and high school curriculum.
I will be committed to making decisions that are fiscally responsible and to maintaining the excellent staffing, facilities and technological enhancements that are recognized as some of the best mid-Michigan has to offer!

Hello my names is Daniel LaPoint, Jr. I have lived in Olivet sinde the day my father and mother (Daniel LaPoint Sr. and Judith LaPoint) brought me home from Oaklawn Hospital August 22, 2917. From the age of five I attended Olivet Community Schools and by some miracle I graduated from Olivet High School in 1991. I started working at the age of 14 on a pid garm for John and Myrna Walters. At the age of 16, I was a bottle boy at the TJ Party Store and before I graduated I was working Co-Op as a union carpenter. Shortly after graduation I started my own business (Quality Excavators, Inc.) in 1992. I enjoyed the hard work and long hours and most of all the good people I built friendships with along the way. In 2014, I decided to sell the company to spend more time with my family and do some traveling. Since then my wife Peggy and I have stared a new company, Lifetime Adventures, LLC. Our goal is to take people to Colorado so they may experience the beauty of the mountains and what it has to offer (www.lifetimeadventuresllc.com). But even after traveling, a small town boy still loves to come back to Olivet, to the place that he calls home.
